Understanding Incoterms® 2020

Incoterms® are international shipping terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). They define the responsibilities of sellers and buyers in global trade— covering delivery, insurance, duties, and risk at each stage of a shipment.

    • EXW Any mode
    • Buyer takes full responsibility from seller’s location
    • FCA Any mode
    • Seller hands over goods to the carrier at a chosen point
    • CPT Any mode
    • Seller pays for carriage, buyer assumes risk at dispatch
    • CIP Any mode
    • Same as CPT, but seller pays for insurance too
    • DAP Any mode
    • Seller delivers to destination, buyer clears customs
    • DPU Any mode
    • Seller delivers and unloads at final location
    • DDP Any mode
    • Seller covers everything, including customs and delivery
    • FAS Sea freight only
    • Seller delivers alongside vessel, buyer loads and ships
    • FOB Sea freight only
    • Seller loads goods, buyer takes risk once onboard
    • CFR Sea freight only
    • Seller pays shipping, buyer assumes risk on vessel
    • CIF Sea freight only
    • Same as CFR, plus seller pays for insurance

    “Any mode” includes air, road, rail, and sea. “Sea freight only” is used for bulk cargo.
